How To Create A ‘Zen Zone’ In Your Home
People who know me always hear me talking about my ‘spot.’ No, not a spot on my carpet or my favorite chair but rather, a space in my home where I feel renewed and at ease.
A place just for me.
Where I can curl up with a good book or just close my eyes for five minutes before the start of my day.
Let’s face it…we all live busy lives and are often stretched way too thin at times. Although I don’t have a magic potion for achieving a perfect equilibrium (like that even exists) I have realized finding time to renew and recharge, even if it’s just for a few minutes, is the single most important part of my day.
Which brings me to my secret weapon. My ‘zen zone’.
My little haven that I treat as a sacred space just for me and where I can quickly shift my mindset and renew my strength to face the next challenge of the day.
Personally, I use my zen zone as a place to meditate and to be present to how grateful I am for the blessings in my life. I love to journal, so this is where I find time to write.
Some of my clients use theirs as a place to read a few pages from a book, flip through a magazine or cool down after a fight with the hubby.
Whatever it is you have going on in your life, you can use your spot as a place to recharge.

3 tips for creating a zen space in your home
1. Get creative
If you have a beautiful little nook in your home like a windowsill or patio, that’s wonderful! However, even if you live in a tiny apartment and don’t have a space that seems like an obvious sanctuary, you can still create your own zen zone. Sometimes, you have to think outside the box!
I’ve seen unused bedrooms, walk-in closets and basement nooks that rarely get used turned into awesome zen spaces. Personally, I use a corner of a second bedroom we converted to a makeshift media room, which has a loveseat and oversized TV. The point is, there is no house that is too small, or life too busy for you to carve out a little space of your own.

2. Make it your own
Once you’ve selected the location for your zen zone, it’s time to fill it with things that make you feel relaxed and energized. This might be your comfy cushions, a gorgeous scented candle, prints with inspiring quotes, a pile of your favorite books or a tea set and kettle so you can make yourself a cup and relax. Or if you prefer, you can leave it quite bare and minimalistic. Remember, this is YOUR zen zone, so it’s all about making it your own.
3. Create a ritual
If you live with others, it’s a good idea to let them know that when you’re in the zen zone, you’re not to be disturbed. It may sound selfish, but it’s actually quite the opposite! Making space for yourself each day will make you a better mother, wife, employee, friend…you name it! It’s similar to how you need to put your own oxygen mask on in the airplane before you can help anyone else.
Once you’ve put up your imaginary (or literal do not disturb sign!), you may want to create a ritual for your zen zone. It might be always lighting the same candle, making a cup of the same herbal tea or saying the same affirmation: for example “I deserve to take time to rest.” By making a habit of this, you can train your brain (and body) that going into your zen zone means it’s time to unwind.
